Maybe it’s just me. Maybe it’s not. But I currently reside in Japan but earn the majority of my income from consulting projects in the States. I’ve been filing taxes with the state I previously lived in ever since I started consulting, including the time I’ve lived abroad.
Up to now, all I had to do was report my income… no payment necessary at the state level. As of May of last year, I have been required to pay taxes on my income at both the federal level (as usual) AND the state level even though I no longer reside in the state. Maybe it’s fair, maybe not, but it just doesn’t feel right to me. 仕方がないですね(oh well, not much I can do about it).

Did the first Americans have British accents? -
I’d always assumed that Americans used to have British accents, and that American accents diverged after the Revolutionary War, while British accents remained more or less the same.
Americans in 1776 did have British accents in that American accents and British accents hadn’t yet diverged. That’s not too surprising.
What is surprising, though, is that those accents were much closer to today’s American accents than to today’s British accents. While both have changed over time, it’s actually British accents that have changed much more drastically since then.
